Pennsylvania State Police are looking for a few new applicants, but humans need not apply.
They are seeking public donations of horses for their mounted patrol unit.
State police spokesman Ryan Tarkowski details what duties the horses will serve.
“These are the horses you see out doing crowd control at things like sporting events,” Tarkowski said. “They also respond to search and rescue in challenging terrain. They respond to civil unrest when the trooper can benefit from a higher vantage point.”
The horses must be geldings between the ages of 5 to 15. Tarkowski also lists other requirements.
“The horses have to have quiet and sound disposition; be free of serious stable vices, because they are in our stable academy in Hershey,” Tarkowski said. “They will also have to be trained. They have a very robust training period to make sure they’re suitable for the job.”
Tarkowski added that some people can’t take care of their horses anymore, and are looking for a suitable home for their horses. He said those are the kinds of people who have donated horses in the past.
For those interested, police say to contact Sgt. Carrie A. Neidigh at cneidigh@pa.gov or 717-533-3463.
