The Greater Pennsylvania affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Foundation will permanently close by the end of the year.
A recent press release from the organization stated that the national headquarters of the organization is centralizing all operations which eliminates the need for local affiliates.
Pittsburgh became an affiliate of the national organization in 2005 and merged with the Northeast PA affiliate to serve 53 counties as Greater Pennsylvania in 2018.
The Greater PA affiliate will contribute its remaining funds to five nonprofit organizations within the state that advance the work of breast cancer education, screening, and treatment.
Details of how the national Susan G. Komen headquarters will handle services and local events like the popular Pittsburgh Race for the Cure event are yet to be determined.
