The Pittsburgh Penguins gave up a 3-1 third period lead and lost 4-3 in a shootout to the Columbus Blue Jackets last night. Rickard Rakell scored twice in the third period to give the Pens a two-goal lead. But, Columbus scored their second goal two minutes later and netted the game-tying goal on a late power play. The Blue Jackets outscored the Penguins 2-0 in the shootout.
It was the Penguins fourth loss in a row, three coming in extra time. It was also the first time Columbus defeated the Penguins on their home ice since 2015.
They host the Edmonton Oilers Thursday.
The Pens played without Evgeni Malkin last night who is battling an injury.
Penguins captain Sidney Crosby set the record for most face-off wins during last night’s game. Crosby won his 15,183rd face-off in the second period, passing Boston’s Patrice Bergeron NHL record since the league began tracking that statistic in the 1997-98 season.
