The Pittsburgh Penguins defeated the Washington Capitals 5-4 in overtime last night at PPG Paints Arena. Sidney Crosby scored the game-winner in the overtime period. It was the 17th time Crosby has scored an overtime goal – moving him into a tie with Ilya Kovalchuk for third on the NHL’s all-time overtime goal list.
Casey DeSmith stopped 22 of 26 shots in net for the Pens. He rebounded after allowing three goals in the first period. The Pens scored three of their own in the second period – two power play goals and a short-handed goal.
Injuries are beginning to stack up among the Penguins defensemen. Marcus Pettersson left the game after a blind-side hit by the Capitals T.J. Osche and did not return. Juuso Riikola also left the game with an upper body injury. Riikola had taken the place of Mike Matheson who was injured in the previous game with Washington. It is expected that Matheson will miss significant time.
