One man is in custody following a fatal shooting last night in the City of Butler.
The incident happened around 9:30 at the intersection of American and North Sixth Avenues, which is in the city’s West End neighborhood.
Butler City Police say their initial investigation shows that a dispute broke out between 37-year-old Sean Williams and 47-year-old Christopher Waggett, both of Butler.
According to charging documents, multiple people gathered at a home in the 200 block of American Avenue on Tuesday night. During the get-together, a comment was made that upset the mother of Williams’ girlfriend. In response, Waggett allegedly stood up and restrained the mother. That eventually led to Williams and Waggett beginning to argue.
Police say that after the argument initially subsided, the two began to argue once again. After this argument, Waggett left the house and began walking on American Avenue. That’s when Williams took a gun out of his girlfriend’s purse and went toward Waggett on the street.
Witnesses told police that Waggett and Williams continued to fight, and that either Williams had a bottle smacked over his head or swatted out of his hand. Following that exchange, Williams allegedly fired one shot into Waggett’s upper body.
Crews responded to the scene and performed life saving measures on Waggett, but he ultimately died from his injuries.
Williams fled the scene and hid near his West New Castle Street house, but was soon located by police.
He was taken into custody and placed in the Butler County Prison.
Williams is facing one count of criminal homicide and bail was set at $2 million.
Anyone that saw the shooting, or has video evidence, should reach out to Butler City Police.
