A local lawmaker is being challenged by a nationwide organization over his proposal to define milk.
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals or PETA recently sent a letter to state senator Elder Vogel.
Vogel is introducing a bill to define milk in a way that would omit plant-based beverages such as oat milk, soy milk, or almond milk.
PETA encourages Vogel to change the name of milk to what it actually is which is “bovine mammary secretions.”
“The label ‘bovine mammary secretions’ should clear up any confusion as to what that white stuff from a cow is. Of course, cows aren’t the only animals who make milk for their babies,” PETA President Ingrid Newkirk wrote in a statement. “And cows’ mammary secretions aren’t meant for humans any more than cat’s milk, rat’s milk, or bat’s milk is, and drinking it is just as ridiculous.”
PETA went on to outline alleged abuses of cows by the dairy industry.
Vogel is not believed to have responded to the PETA letter.
