Perhaps the sunshine this morning played a role, but Punxsutawney Phil made his annual prediction earlier today.
The mythological rodent emerged from his burrow to declare that he saw his shadow, meaning six more weeks of winter.
The members of Gobbler’s Knob gathered on stage to make the announcement at sunrise.
The popular event saw thousands gather in Punxsutawney for the early morning festivities.
The annual tradition is attributed to a Pennsylvania Dutch superstition that if a groundhog sees its shadow, it will return to its burrow, meaning there will be six more weeks of winter.
The holiday garners much fanfare in Punxatawney, with the ceremony being held at Gobbler’s Knob. It at times has had an attendance of 10,000. The first groundhog celebration for the day can be traced to the late 1800s.
