Despite a five-run ninth inning, the Pittsburgh Pirates lost to the Philadelphia Phillies 8-7 last night at PNC Park. The Bucs were held scoreless until they scored twice in the seventh inning. Starting pitcher Zach Thompson allowed seven earned runs on 11 hits in the first six innings. Cal Mitchell led the Bucs with three hits, including his third home run of the season. Kevin Newman added two hits and drove in two runs.
The loss was the Pirates fourth in a row and ninth in their past 11 games.
The Bucs and Phils play again tonight on the inaugural “Yinzerpalooza Night” with activities beginning around the ballpark this afternoon. Game time is 7:05pm. Pre-game on WISR begins at 6:40pm.
