The PIAA released the new sports classifications Tuesday. The state athletic organization realigns every two years, based on current school enrollments in grades 9-11.
In the WPIAL, Class 6A football will shrink from eight teams to five. Teams that will be on the move include the North Catholic and Central Valley football teams, who played in the Class 3A football championship last fall, will move up to 4A. West Allegheny and Kiski Area will drop from Class 5A to 4A.
Currently,
Class 6A boys basketball will be reduced from 17 teams to 11 next season. Fox Chapel, North Hills, Peters Township, Bethel Park and Penn-Trafford will all move down to 5A. Girls 6A basketball shrinks from 15 to 11. The new alignment takes effect for the 2022-23 seasons.
