The Pittsburgh Pirates announced the signing of Konnor Griffin, their top selection in the July MLB draft. The high school shortstop from Jackson, Mississippi signed for $6.5 million. The Gatorade National Player of the Year was introduced at a news conference Wednesday morning at PNC Park. Griffin, who skipped his sophomore year to become a junior at the prep level, now will forgo his commitment to LSU to join the Pirates organization as a professional. The Pirates have now signed 17 of their 21 draft picks, including four of the five high school players they selected.
