The Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the Colorado Rockies 11-8 last night in the opening game of a four-game series. Kevin Newman had four hits and hit two home runs, driving in four. Adam Frazier also had four hits. Jose Osuna and Colin Moran had two hits each. Osuna hit his ninth home run of the year.
The Bucs built a 9-2 lead in the first two innings. The Pirates bullpen allowed five runs in the eighth to the Rockies.
Pirates starting pitcher Trevor Williams went seven innings last night, allowing three runs on seven hits. He did not walk a batter and struck out six. He improved his record to 7-6. Felipe Vazquez earned his 24th save with a perfect ninth inning. He struck out two of the three batters.
The Bucs and Rockies play again tonight at 8:40pm in Denver.
Outfielder Bryan Reynolds had one hit in five at-bats last nignt. His average is now .328, two points behind Jeff McNeil of the New York Mets and Milwaukee’s Christian Yelich.
With his four hits, Kevin Newman is batting .309 this season.
