The Pittsburgh Pirates begin their regular season Thursday at Wrigley Field against the Chicago Cubs.
The Pirates defeated the Baltimore Orioles 2-1 Sunday. Mitch Keller started for the Bucs, and despite four walks, allowed just one hit over three shutout innings. Adam Frazier had two hits, including his sixth double of the spring. He has ten extra-base hits this spring, one off the MLB lead.
The Pirates host Minnesota this afternoon. They have two spring training games remaining.
Over the weekend, veteran Todd Frazier opted out of his contract with the Bucs, and became a free agent. It was not likely he was going to make the team’s opening roster. That is likely due to some impressive spring numbers from Philip Evans, who is batting over .400. Pirate shortstop Kevin Newman had three hits Saturday – and is batting an insane .727 this spring. Newman’s efforts are overshadowing second baseman Adam Frazier, who is batting in the .500 range.
