The Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the Chicago Cubs 5-2 last night at Wrigley Field. Francisco Cervelli and Starling Marte each hit a home run in the game. Both had two hits a piece. Pirates starting pitcher Jordan Lyles allowed just one run on three hits over six innings. He walked one and struck out 10.
Felipe Vazquez earned his third save by getting the final five outs of the game, striking out four. Reliever Keone Kela continues to struggle. He took over the game in the eighth inning, allowing a run on two hits with a walk in 1/3rd of an inning.
The two teams complete their three-game series tonight at 8:05pm. Hear the game on WISR beginning at 7:40pm. Joe Musgrove will start for the Pirates. Jose Quintana will start for the Cubs.
The Bucs are now 6-4 overall and a half-game behind first place Milwaukee.
Pirate starting pitcher Chris Archer is appealing his MLB suspension of five games.
Two of the three players the Pirates sent to Tampa Bay for Archer had big games Wednesday. Tyler Glasnow had his third impressive start and third win of the season. He did not allow a run over six innings, giving up two hits and striking out a career-high 11. Outfielder Austin Meadows hit his fourth home run of the season and drove in three. He had a double and single as well. The Rays are off to their best start in nine years at 10-3.
Former Slippery Rock University first baseman Matt Adams drove in four runs last night in Washington’s 15-1 victory over Philadelphia.
