The Pittsburgh Pirates were shutout last night 5-0 in the opening game of a three game series with the Diamondbacks in Arizona. Pirates starting pitcher Andrew Heaney allowed all five runs over five innings. The Bucs had six hits in the game, but left eight men on base, and went 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position.
It was a major league-leading ninth shutout for the Pirates this season.
The game saw the debut of another top pitching prospect for the Pirates when Braxton Ashcraft made his first major league appearance. He struck out the first batter he faced and tossed three scoreless innings.
