Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Paul Skenes has been named a finalist for the National League Rookie of the Year award, and a finalist for the N.L. Cy Young Award. In 23 starts this season, Skenes went 11-3 with a 1.96 ERA. He also limited opposing hitters to a combined .198 batting average, which was the lowest against a Pirates starting pitcher in team history among hurlers who made at least 16 starts. The winners will be announced next Monday.
Although he would have to top Philadelphia’s Zach Wheeler or Atlanta’s Chris Sale, Skenes could become just the eighth rookie in MLB history to win both the Rookie of the Year and Cy Young awards.
