The Pittsburgh Pirates and Detroit Tigers split their doubleheader Wednesday. The Tigers took game one 8-0, battering rookie Jared Jones for seven runs, five earned, in 4-1/3rd innings. The Bucs managed just three hits and had three errors in the game.
The Pirates won the second game 10-2 behind 13 hits and the pitching of rookie Paul Skenes, who struck out nine batters on his 22nd birthday. Skenes allowed two runs on three hits over six innings for his second victory in four career starts.
The Pirates bullpen of Colin Holderman, Aroldis Chapman and David Bednar closed the game with three shutout innings, allowing just one hit.
The Bucs are off today. They visit Toronto for a three-game series beginning Friday night.
