The Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the Boston Red Sox 7-6 last night. Bryan Reynolds led the Bucs with two home runs and three hits. A total of six home runs were hit in the game, which featured eight runs being scored in the first inning.
Pirates starting pitcher Johan Oviedo allowed five runs, four earned in the opening frame, then did not allow another run while pitching into the fifth inning. He was one out from earning the victory when manager Derek Shelton went to the bullpen. David Bednar earned his second save with a perfect ninth inning, striking out two.
The Pirates left just three runners in scoring position. Boston left 12 men on base, including seven in scoring position.
It was the Pirates first win at Boston’s Fenway Park since 2005.
The Bucs and Red Sox play again tonight at 7:10pm. They complete the series tomorrow afternoon. The Bucs have an off-day Thursday, then host the Chicago White Sox for their Friday afternoon home opener at PNC Park.
Roansy Contreras will pitch for the Pirates.
