Late NFL star Demaryius Thomas had the degenerative brain disease chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) when he died last December, doctors from Boston University who had been studying his brain through the Concussion Legacy Foundation said yesterday.
It was at stage 2. CTE is linked to repeated blows to the head, and has become a focus of attention in the NFL. Thomas was found dead in his home at age 33. No official cause of death has been given, but his family believed seizures he’d had since a 2019 car crash might have led to his death. Family members said he’d also struggled with common conditions associated with CTE, including memory loss, paranoia and other erratic behavior.
Thomas, who played 10 seasons before his June 2021 retirement, is one of more than 300 former NFL players who have been diagnosed with CTE by the BU CTE Center research team.
