The Pitt football team opened their season with a thrilling 38-31 victory over West Virginia in the return of the “Backyard Brawl”. Panthers quarterback Kedon Slovis threw for 308 yards and a touchdown in his Panthers debut. The Pitt defense allowed the Mountaineers more than 400 yards in total offense, but had a 56-yard interception return for a touchdown for the winning score.
The game a record crowd of 70,622 fans at Acrisure Stadium, the most to ever see a sporting event in Pittsburgh history.
Pitt will host Tennessee next Saturday, the first time the Panthers have ever hosted a team from the Southeast Conference. The Volunteers opened their season with a 59-10 victory over Ball State last night.
Penn State opened their season with a come-from-behind 35-31 victory over Purdue on the road for their season opener. Nittany Lions quarterback Sean Clifford engineered a final minute touchdown drive for the win, after he had thrown a 72-yard “pick six” to give the Boilermakers the lead in the fourth quarter.
