State police say nearly 1,000 drivers of commercial vehicles ignored the governor’s orders to stay off the Pennsylvania Turnpike and most interstates last weekend because of the threat of a substantial winter storm.
Troopers issued a total of 993 citations and 222 warnings to drivers who disregarded the commercial vehicle ban.
Officers in Troop D- which covers Butler County- issued more than 100 citations.
Officials say restricting high-profile vehicles during dangerous weather conditions helps to not only prevent crashes, but also keeps the highways clear for plow trucks and emergency vehicles. Last weekend’s ban was lifted as the weather improved.
A citation for failing to observe travel restrictions during a state emergency carries a fine of $300 plus court costs.
