Authorities are warning the public about a recent scam attempt that impacted a resident in neighboring Mercer County.
According to State Police, an unidentified 74-year-old woman from East Lackawannock Township received a fraudulent email around August 1st from “the security department at Microsoft.” The email then led to a fraudulent phone call with personnel.
Officials say that during the scam, scammers will claim that the victim visited illegal websites and are going to be turned into the FBI. The scammers will also state that a tiny banker Trojan will impact both the victim’s computer and bank account. The victim may receive additional phone calls from these scammers who manipulate the victim’s caller ID to show that additional phone calls from the scammer were coming from a bank.
It was not immediately known if any other local residents have recently received similar communications.
