Workers at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette are now on strike, the first major work stoppage at a Pittsburgh paper in 30 years.
Journalists announced a strike at noon yesterday. Representative for the newspaper guild say they are “taking a stand against the hostile and illegal treatment” of the employees by the Block family ownership group.
Journalists have been without a contract since 2017 and negotiations since that time have been tense.
The last major strike of newspaper workers in Pittsburgh happened in 1992 at the Pittsburgh Press. The strike eventually led to the sale of the Press to the Block family, which then merged the paper with the Post-Gazette.
