A total of 100 disciplinary actions were filed across the state in June for unsafe digging practices- including one in Butler County.
The local violation occurred in June of 2019 when Rotnour Excavating was installing water lines for Barrington Homes in Cranberry Township on Carry Back Court.
A 2-inch plastic gas main was struck and damaged. Columbia Gas showed evidence that the lines had been properly marked. Rotnour Excavating was fined $2,500 and Barrington Homes was fined $250. Rotnour Excavating attempted to reject their penalties, citing immediate notification of authorities with no evacuation necessary.
The PA One Call Damage Prevention Committee is tasked with reducing the number of hits on underground utilities. This committee is part of the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission’s independent Bureau of Investigation and Enforcement.
State law requires contractors and residents to contact PA One Call by dialing 8-1-1 at least three business days before an excavation so utilities can mark where lines are located.
