The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission is offering improved protections for families and businesses struggling with the financial impact of COVID-19.
Earlier this week the PUC adopted a series of enhanced consumer protections and also established a framework for future conversations about utility assistance and economic recovery.
One of the protections is no utility terminations for residents within 300% of the Federal Poverty Income Guidelines. These customers must apply for all available assistance programs and establish a payment plan with the utility. Late payment charges will also be waived for low income customers. Utilities must reach out to those at risk for termination presenting payment options before termination notices are sent. Small businesses will receive the option of an 18 month payment arrangement and not have utilities shut off if payments remain current.
These safeguards will remain in effect until the end of March unless Governor Wolf lifts his emergency proclamation before that or the PUC announces a different plan.
