As the heat wave continues this week the Red Cross has provided information on what to do to stay cool.
According to the Red Cross, last year there were around 2,300 heat related deaths in the United States. The Red Cross has provided tools information to keep cool and avoid hospitalization.
Any work outdoor work that cannot be avoided during peak heat hours should include frequent breaks, limit strenuous exercise, and stay hydrated. Sugary, caffeinated, and alcoholic drinks should be avoided as they can dehydrate you faster.
The best way to keep cool during the heat is to stay indoors and if you do not have access to air conditioning public library’s, shopping malls, or cooling centers are the best place to head. You can call 211 or visit pa211.org for more locations.
Finally look for the signs of heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke which can be deadly and requires immediate medical help.
The Red Cross also advises on checking on loved ones and those who may be at risk and never leave a child or pet in a hot car.
