As the Red Cross deals with a historically low supply of blood, they are asking people to consider becoming regular donors in the future.
Lisa Landis is with the American Red Cross and she says very few people donate on a regular basis.
“It is a very small percentage that are regular blood donors. That’s every 56 days you can donate red blood cells and spend an hour making your donation,” Landis said.
Landis says any type of blood donation can go a long way right now.
“If folks would become routine donors, of course that’s going to help us long term. But right now, I really think the most critical thing is to reach folks who were considering donating for the first time,” Landis said.
Late last year the Red Cross announced that, for the first time ever, the country was facing a critically low supply of blood donations.
