September is National Preparedness Month and the American Red Cross is encouraging residents to take action.
Officials say last year more than 40% of Americans, or about 130 million people, lived in a county affected by a climate-related disaster.
In an effort to stay ready, Red Cross representatives recommend getting a kit, making a plan, and staying informed. Pets should be included in any emergency plans as well as any special considerations.
Disaster preparedness also includes making sure that blood products are ready for those who may need them during a crisis. Donors this month could receive a Red Cross T-shirt, a coupon for a free haircut, or be entered to win a VIP NASCAR experience.
More information about volunteering as a member of a Disaster Action Team is available on the Red Cross website.
