The Cincinnati Reds defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-3 on opening day in baseball Thursday. The Reds scored four runs in the seventh inning off Pirates starting pitcher Jameson Taillon and reliever Richard Rodriguez. Taillon allowed four runs on six hits over six innings. Corey Dickerson had a home run.
Cincinnati starting pitcher Luis Castillo went 5-2/3rds innings, allowing one run on two hits. He walked three and struck out eight Pirates.
Starling Marte was a late scratch from the game because of a migraine headache. J.B. Shuck replaced him. Shuck was 0-fo-2 with two walks and a strikeout.
