Congressman Mike Kelly is co-sponsoring a bipartisan bill that looks to help families cover the cost of playing youth sports.
The Republican from Butler recently announced that the bill, known as the PHIT Act, has received support from the NFL, NBA, and NHL.
The bill would allow a medical care tax deduction for up to $1,000 of qualified sports and fitness expenses per year.
Kelly says that youth sports and fitness activities are a form of preventive health care and a way to build character of kids.
“As a former college football player and youth football coach myself, I’ve seen young Americans greatly improve their lives because they were able to join a team and play sports,” Kelly said. “This bill gives kids, especially those in underserved or low-income communities, a real chance to play the sport of their choice.
He also says this eliminates financial barriers that can make it harder for low-income families or communities to support youth sports.
