The donation of some expensive equipment to the South Butler School District will allow for students there to get a better look at the stars.
The South Butler County School Board recently accepted the donation of a 7-inch Mead Maksutov-Cassegrain telescope, as well as an 18-inch Obsession telescope from local resident Joseph Kozaro. Both telescopes are portable and worth about a combined $15,000.
According to Knoch High School Physics teacher Laurel Nickles, the telescopes will mostly be used for science club gatherings at first. The equipment will also support the high school physics curriculum. The telescopes are now being assembled in AP Physics class as time permits.
As long as weather permits from November through February the telescopes will be set up to allow students to view before sunrise or after sunset. The goal of having this equipment is to get as many students as possible to take a closer look at the universe with their own eyes.
