A few Butler County municipalities have been awarded state grant funding to improve local traffic conditions, including one intersection that has been home to a number of accidents.
Penn Township will receive nearly $447,000 in grants through the PennDOT Automated Red Light Enforcement program. The money will be used for signal replacement and reconfiguration at the intersection of Route 8 and Airport Road. The intersection has been one of the more dangerous driving areas in Butler County, with multiple violent crashes and fatal accidents.
Cranberry Township has been awarded $350,000 for Route 19 and Short Street traffic signal upgrade and modernization. Work to be done includes new mast arms to support additional signal heads.
Butler Township will receive nearly $250,000 for signal modernization at the Pittsburgh Street and McCalmont Road/Vogel Road intersection. Improvements include new signal heads and reflective back plates.
A total of 32 municipalities across the state received a combined nearly $15 million to fund 36 safety projects. Grant funding is received from red light violation fines with a goal of improving regional safety.
