A small borough in Butler County was recognized last week as part of the 135th anniversary of the opening of the Brooklyn Bridge in New York.
John Roebling- the founder of Saxonburg- is also the man behind the Brooklyn Bridge, which opened to traffic on May 24, 1883. Roebling designed the wire rope suspension bridge but died as a result of a freak accident before the bridge was completed.
Roebling’s life is detailed in a short film titled ‘Roebling’s Bridge,’ which was shown in a special screening last week in Brooklyn to commemorate the anniversary.
