District Attorney Rich Goldinger says the county’s Emergency Services Unit was not responsible for covering the area near Saturday’s shooting.
Goldinger tells our newsroom that the Butler County ESU team was not assigned to the American Glass Research property. He said that was never communicated to him by the Secret Service.
He also added that he doesn’t know who was in that area, and that local police were there to help with support.
Our news partners at WPXI report that members of Beaver County’s sniper team spotted Crooks before the shooting. They reportedly called in the suspicious activity to the command center.
The Secret Service says that “local police” were responsible for the area around AGR, but it’s unclear which specific force was in that area.
Sheriff Mike Slupe has said that a Butler Township Police Officer tried to climb onto the roof and saw Crooks before the shooting. However, Crooks faced the officer, who was not in position to wield his gun. The officer then dropped to safety, and that’s when Crooks began to fire.
