A United States Senator from Pennsylvania is advancing a bill that would protect children from being crushed, trapped, or stuck by furniture, televisions, or appliances.
Democratic Senator Bob Casey was joined by two other colleagues in recently introducing the STURDY Act which stands for Stop Tip-overs of Unstable, Risky Dressers on Youth.
This bill would change the stability standard for manufacturers of clothing storage units from voluntary to mandatory which would require companies to test products for safety and stability before sale.
A recent report from the Consumer Product Safety Commission reveals that tip-overs cause an average of nearly 26,000 emergency room injuries for children each year including 460 deaths since 2000.
