A local lawmaker is trying to help to give a patriotic remembrance to those who have served by ensuring the availability of flags.
State Senator Scott Hutchinson is encouraging the administration of Governor Tom Wolf to lift the restrictions currently preventing a flag manufacturer in the eastern part of the state from shipping orders.
FlagZone in Berks County manufacturers high quality U.S. flags of all sizes but was determined to be non-life-sustaining so has been forced to remain closed since March. Company officials have said that shipping flags would require minimal staff and could be done safely.
Hutchinson was alerted of the possibility of flag shortages by a constituent in neighboring Clarion County who expressed concern about the graves of veterans not being recognized in time for Memorial Day.
Meanwhile, here in Butler County, we talked to John Cyprian, Director of Butler County Veteran Services. He told us that he ordered flags from a different company this year. Therefore, Butler will have enough flags for local cemeteries.
Cyprian says the flags for our area have already been given to the various veteran’s organizations who are each in charge taking care of placing the flags cemeteries. The organizations all have their own schedules of when they’ll put the flags on the graves. Cyprian says most flags will likely will be placed this or next weekend.
