Local lawmakers continue to push back on a proposal by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation that would implement a toll on a number bridges across the state.
The Pennsylvania Senate has introduced legislation to stop the toll bridges through Senate Bill 382 that would reform the Public-Private Transportation Partnership stature and void PennDOT’s Pathways Major Bridge P3 Initiative.
The one to two dollar toll though has brought pushback from lawmakers like Senator Scott Hutchinson.
“This is nothing more than a proposal by the Governor to raise taxes, or tolls, without legislative approval,” Hutchinson said. “It’s not enough in their minds that Pennsylvanians already pay the second highest gas tax in America; and I hear about that every single day from my constituents.”
A total of nine bridges would be impacted by the decision—including two in Western PA: the Canoe Creek Bridge in Clarion County and Bridgeville Interchange on I-79.
