A local state senator is supporting legislation that would limit how long governors are able to extend emergency declarations without legislative approval.
Senate Bill 2 proposes three amendments to the State Constitution including one that would limit an emergency declaration to 21 days unless given approval for a longer duration by the General Assembly.
Senator Scott Hutchinson has announced his support of this measure which would only apply to future emergency declarations. Currently, the governor can designate an emergency for up to 90 days and then renew that declaration indefinitely.
If this bill is approved by the state House of Representatives, then approved again by both houses in a consecutive session, it would go before Pennsylvania voters for final approval. That could happen as soon as the upcoming spring primary election.
