A Pennsylvania U.S. Senator is renewing his call for improved background checks in the wake of last week’s Florida high school shooting.
U.S. Senator Pat Toomey says the federal background check system for firearm sales needs to be improved.
It’s rare that the republican senator is breaking ranks with the GOP.
In 2012, Toomey co-sponsored legislation to extend background checks to online sales and gun shows following the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School. Only four republicans supported the bill and it did not pass.
Toomey says he will continue to engage with colleagues on both sides of the aisle in an effort to achieve progress.
