Pennsylvania Senator Pat Toomey is expected to vote against two major fiscal measures later this week.
The Republican appeared on CNN’s “State of the Union” and said that if the debt limit and government funding bills are tied together, he’s voting against it.
“I will certainly be voting no if the Democrats insist on combining the debt ceiling increase for suspension with the continuing operations of the government,” Toomey said.
Toomey says that markets would have reacted negatively if they thought the U.S. would default on its fiscal obligations.
“I think that’s because the millions of investors across the country know that’s calamity is going to occur,” Toomey said. “Chuck Schumer is going to do what he should’ve done months ago; he will amend the budget resolution so Democrats can pass the debt ceiling all by themselves. And that’s what should happen.”
Last night, Senate Republicans blocked a bill to suspend the debt limit and avert a government shutdown.
