A local lawmaker recently teamed up to state administrators to celebrate a change to how milk can be sold.
Republican State Senator Elder Vogel attended a ceremony earlier this week in Harrisburg to mark the enactment of Act 62 of 2021.
“This update allows for sell-by and best-by dates based on science,” Vogel said. “Designating Pennsylvania’s fluid milk to better compete with the milk from surrounding areas and states.”
Instead of the current 17-day sell-by date after pasteurization, milk producers will be able to apply for approval from the state Department of Agriculture using periodic testing requirements and laboratory standards.
“As a result Pennsylvania’s processors will be competitive when bidding against milk from surrounding states, and our milk will not be at a disadvantage on grocery store shelves,” Vogel said.
Vogel thanked his Senate co-sponsors as well as Secretary Russell Redding of the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture and the state Dairy Futures Commission.
