A group of local high school students have been honored statewide for using problem-solving, creative, and strategic-thinking abilities to solve a real-world problem.
A team of students from the Seneca Valley School District achieved a second place finish in the third annual PennDOT Innovations Challenge. After winning in local District 10 earlier this year, Seneca Valley students along with 10 other regional winners made their presentations electronically to PennDOT judges.
PennDOT and the PA Department of Environmental Protection asked kids in grades 9 through 12 last fall to come up with cost-effective technologies and innovative methods that can be developed in the next 5 to 10 years to control litter along roadways. Seneca Valley students came up with “Litter Gitters” which are specialized trash cans installed at strategic locations.
A team from the Monroe Career and Technical Institute near Allentown took first place and $3,000 prize will be divided between the top three teams.
