September is National Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders Awareness Month and local agencies are making an extra effort to encourage pregnant women to abstain from consuming alcohol.
Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders covers a range of effects that can occur to a child when a mother drinks alcohol during pregnancy including mental, physical, behavioral, and learning disabilities.
The Butler County Commissioners are expected to issue a proclamation at their meeting later this month. The County Drug and Alcohol Program is trying to educate and raise awareness through brochures at local medical offices as well as posters at beer distributors.
Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders affects about 40,000 infants each year but is 100% preventable when women abstain from alcohol while pregnant. Visit the Butler First Step Facebook page for more information.
