Governor Josh Shapiro was in Eastern Ohio earlier this week as part of a joint press conference on the train derailment in East Palestine.
Shapiro was joined by Ohio Governor Mike DeWine and the head of the U.S. Department of Environmental Protection.
Shapiro says no problems have been found so far in neighboring Beaver County, but his administration is keeping a watchful eye.
“Pennsylvania continues to see no concerning air quality readings after this incident and we’re now collecting the baseline water readings as well,” Shapiro said. “However, the Commonwealth is going to continue monitoring water, air, and environment to make sure that Pennsylvanians have the information they need to stay safe in the weeks and months ahead.”
Shapiro also said that his administration is going to hold the rail company Norfolk Southern accountable.
“The company made this vigilance necessary. The combination of Norfolk Southern’s corporate greed, incompantance, and lack of care for our residents is absolutely unacceptable to me,” Shapiro said.
