National Nurses Week is now underway and various officials and organizations are expressing appreciation for these essential medical professionals.
Slippery Rock University is honoring Student Health Center nurses Barb Mathews and Grace Hajave who recently retired after a combined 50 years with the university.
“We’ve had all kinds of changes over the years and things that we’ve had to adjust to and be aware of, and COVID has just been another one of them,” Mathews said. “We’ve had some really great nurses here over the years and there’s been a lot of a lot of good mentoring from those who came before me and it’s just been fun to mentor the ones who came after me.”
SRU employs about 30 registered nurses, nurse practitioners, and substitute nurses at the Health Center which has transitioned to telehealth and appointment-only visits during the past year of dealing with COVID.
