We are coming to the end of National Consumer Protection Week and officials at Slippery Rock University are advising students of possible employment scams.
SRU’s First National Bank Office of Career Education and Development is highlighting the vulnerability of many students seeking employment to scams involving failure to pay, bogus certification requirements, or job descriptions that do not match with the work actually being done.
SRU’s online platform that connects students with employers, called Handshake, is able to screen out many high risk employers who could present scam situations however many job seekers find postings through other sources.
These employment candidates are advised to never share social security numbers or bank account information when applying for a job. Candidates should also research prospective employers for legitimate websites or vetting through employment resources like Glassdoor.
