South Butler School District is taking measures to address an ongoing issue with not enough substitute teachers.
By unanimous vote at their Wednesday night meeting, the school board approved a recommendation from Superintendent Dr. David Foley that would try to improve the situation three ways.
First, the motion raises the per day payment for subs from $90 to $95 effective immediately. South Butler actually pays more than that each time a substitute works a day but a 30% fee goes to the substitute staffing service which handles administration and other expenses.
The plan also adds two building substitutes in the Primary School and two more at the Intermediate Elementary. This is not a new expense for the district as these substitutes are already utilized daily in different positions. The secondary building already has a daily sub in place.
Finally, the proposal would offer a $500 wellness incentive for teachers who do not use any sick days. This proposal will go into effect at the beginning of the spring semester pending approval of a memorandum of understanding with the South Butler teacher’s union.
