A bill authored by a local lawmaker that would allow school districts to change their names is advancing.
State Representative Marci Mustello’s House Bill 232 unanimously passed the full state House earlier this week and will next move on to the PA Senate.
Under the new law, a name change would be permitted following a two-thirds majority vote by the school board and approval from the Pennsylvania Department of Education. Currently school districts are unable to take action to change their own names and must instead petition the state legislature to take action which could take many months.
This legislation began when South Butler Superintendent Dr. David Foley contacted Mustello in 2019 about changing the name of that district to Knoch School District.
