The South Butler County School District is continuing to make an effort to secure enough substitute teachers.
By unanimous vote at their Wednesday meeting, the school board approved a recommendation from Superintendent Dr. David Foley that would increase pay for substitutes from $95 to $100 per day.
The last time this rate was increased was 2019 and the new rate is in line with at least three other neighboring districts. South Butler actually pays more than that each time a substitute works a day but a 30% fee goes to the substitute staffing service which handles administration and other expenses. Former South Butler teachers would be paid a rate of $120 per day to substitute.
Foley also anticipates bringing a motion before the board next month that would increase the per day pay for substitutes dedicated to each building every day. Foley would like to see four such substitutes assigned to each building daily but the district currently has only four total in place. When not needed in the classroom, these instructors would be used to help out with curriculum improvement efforts.
