Slippery Rock University is teaming up with a not-yet-opened business to give students a unique learning opportunity.
31 students in SRU’s Food and Beverage Operations class have been able to meet for a portion of this semester at 150 South Main Street in Slippery Rock which is the site of Rooster’s Coffee Bar.
This partnership was formed through the efforts of SRU associate professor of hospitality, event management, and tourism Mary Jo Ross along with Rooster’s co-owners and brothers Bob and Brian McCafferty. Students were able to learn commercial applications of food safety, sourcing, and handling as well as beverage management and menu engineering.
Although meetings at Rooster’s stopped as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, the plan is to allow future sessions of the class to continue to learn in this real-world environment even after the yet undetermined date of the café’s official opening.
