As Mental Health Awareness Month concludes tomorrow, state officials are reminding residents about laws that ensure parity across the state.
According to the Pennsylvania Insurance Department, the Health Insurance Coverage Parity and Nondiscrimination Act requires that health insurers offer equitable access to mental health and substance use disorder services when covered by the plan.
To determine if a plan covers a mental health service, consumers should review plan documents, select a participating provider, obtain prior authorization, and request a drug exception from the insurer if necessary to cover a drug not otherwise covered by the plan.
Additional information and resources are available on the Mental Health Parity webpage of the PA Insurance Department.
